Faith vs Works
1. We must have faith in Christ to be saved.
Rom 3:21 we are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ | Rom 3:22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. |
Gal 3:26 we become sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ | Gal 2:15 man is not justified by observing the Law, but by faith in Jesus Christ |
1 Jn 3:23 Believe in the name Jesus Christ | Jn 1:12-13 to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God |
Gal 2:20 I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me & gave himself for me | Gal 3:24 the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith |
Gal 3:22 Whole world is a prisoner of sin so the promise, being given in Christ might be given to those who believe |
Summary: Christ is the object of our faith, being born again makes us
spiritually alive!
2. We are justified by faith alone.
Rom 1:17 / Gal 3:11 The righteous will live by faith | Gal 3:6 /3:24 faith justifies- it is credited as righteousness |
Gal 5:23-23 If you want the Spirit to grow in us, we must join our lives to his (see Jn 15:4,5) We must know him &imitate him | Gal 5:5 By faith we eagerly await through the spirit the righteousness for which we hope |
3. We cannot boast of our works because
we are not saved by them.
Rom 4:2 If in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about-but not before God. | Rom 4:3 What does scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." |
Gal 5:4 If you try being justified by the law (works) you will alienate yourself from Christ | Rom 3:27-28 Where then is boasting?...For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. |
Gal 3:3 you cannot obtain salvation through human effort | Gal 3:6-9 real Christians are those who have faith not those who keep the law (Hab 2:4) |
Gal 3:10 Anyone who relies on the law is under a curse (Duet 27:6 Rom 3:20-24) | Gal 5:4 If you try being justified by the law you will alienate yourself from Christ |
Phil 3:3 Put no confidence in the flesh(works, credentials) |
Summary: Gal 3:3 One cannot obtain salvation through human effort
(ie giving to the poor, witnessing to your faith door to door, being good etc)
4. Works are the fruit(result) of our faith.
* We must have the Holy Spirit if we
are to produce good works
Gal 6:15 What counts is new creation (spiritual rebirth) |
Gal 5:16-18 we are called to live by the Spirit |
Jn 3:5-8 You must be born of water and the spirit |
Once you are 'spiritually alive' you then can produce the fruit of your faith...
Jn 15:4 If you don't remain in Christ you cannot bear fruit | Gal 5:22 The Spirit produces the character traits
that are found in the nature of Christ. |
Gal 5:23-23 If you want the Spirit to grow in us,
we must join our lives to his (see Jn 15:4,5) We must know him & imitate him |
Gal 2:21 If righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing (you cannot please God by what you do apart from Christ) |
Jas 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such a faith support him? | Jas 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. |
Jas 2:22 You see that faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did |
PRINCIPLES OF FAITH ACCORDING TO JAMES
1) Commitment (essential to faith). You cannot be
a Christian by affirming the right doctrines or agreeing with Biblical facts |
2) Right actions(works) are a by-product of true faith (genuine Christian will have a changed faith) |
3) Faith without good deeds is useless (James 2:14)
* Deeds of a loving service are not a substitute for, but rather a verification of our faith in Christ (Jas 2:17) (NIV BIBLE NOTES) |
